Saturday - Therapy - Ready, set, go!

Dad in his first speech therapy session

Dad with son, Mark

I was up visiting dad again this morning, and I couldn't believe how good he looked. He was sitting up in his wheelchair when I got there with his leg crossed, you couldn't tell anything was even wrong with him, the way he was sitting there. I have also never seen anyone so eager to get well. Today was his first day of physical therapy. I hadn't been in visiting with him very long when the nurse walked in and she hadn't even made it through the doorway and he wanted to know when the speech therapist was going to be there to start. he was as excited as a child on the first day of school. During speech therapy, the therapist was taking him through a bunch of different drills, and most he was able to do. One that he wasn't was when she asked him to count to 10 with her, he watched as she counted to 10, and then said to her "very good".
After he fed himself lunch, the nurse left the side bar down on the left side of his bed, and commented since I was there with him she would leave it down. Dad had been looking at the board that shows when his therapy sessions are and then he would turn and look at the clock. As soon as she left the room, he swung his left leg off the bed, I asked if he wanted to sit up on the edge of the bed and he said yes, so I helped him get his right leg down on the floor too. I really think he was headed to try and get himself into his wheelchair, he kept scooting himself toward it. I said dad, "Please don't try to do that, I'm not strong enough to help you, and he said okay. I said, "You are really excited to go to physical therapy aren't you." His comment of course was yes. They gave him the option of taking tomorrow off from physical therapy, but he doesn't want to miss a day. He is so anxious to get well, what amazing determination! The song that kept going through my mind yesterday was "The Impossible" by Joe Nichols. I expect to see miraculous things!
